| My Thoughts: Fallen Earth, as the developers have often implied, is a deep, open-ended game in a post-apocalyptic world. You take the role of clone who's trying to find out about their past-- who created them, why, and how to get back your immortality. Even though you are forced down this set path, you can do pretty much anything you want to achieve your goal. You can be good, bad, or anything in between. While this sounds good in itself, unfortunately Fallen Earth fails to really be all that much fun. Sure, it's entertaining in short bursts, but at least in my opinion it lacks any real depth to keep you playing. Sure, it's got huge worlds, beautiful graphics, and some neat settings, but there really isn't anything to immerse you into the experience. This is unfortunate because this game could really be amazing. The combat system is, I must admit, rather fun (though can be quite frustrating in lag). The combat system is done in an FPS style where you'll aim your reticle with the mouse cursor and your character will fire towards that point (left mouse button is the primary fire/attack, right mouse button is the secondary fire/attack). You can zoom in with the B key if your weapon has a scope on it, thus increasing your precision for long-distance targets. But no, there are no head shots in this game, sorry. As already stated, in lag this FPS-like system can often be a lot of trouble, and very frustrating. If you get a lag spike you'll often find your cursor darting around the screen, making aiming extremely difficult, and making you an easy, defenseless target. And believe me when I tell you that you'll be getting a lot of lag in this game... Unless, of course, you have one top-of-the-line computer with the best internet connection available to you. It also features a deep crafting system. If you liked the crafting system in "Star Wars Galaxies" than you'll probably enjoy Fallen Earth's crafting system just as much. You can craft nearly everything in the game-- from weapons, to armor, clothes, medicines, bandages, food and even vehicles. The crafting system takes real time as well, where large items can take upwards of a few hours or even day or more to complete. This makes crafting really worthwhile and fulfilling when you finally finish an impressive item. The developers intended that, for the large, hard-to-make items, players would get together help each other. One player might supply, for example, the engine to a car, the other might make the tires, and the other might make the chassis, and so on. But unfortunately because the crafting skills are entirely open to everyone, meaning everyone can craft everything given they have a high enough skill, this doesn't really hold true. Is this a big problem? Not really, but it makes the crafting system a little more shallow, and more of a one person job rather than a bunch of friends getting together to help out and make a really amazing item. The skill system is entirely open as well. There are really no "classes" here. Want to specialize in rifles, with a bit of medicinal skills? Go for it. Maybe you want to be a pistol expert who also is fearsome with a knife? No problem! Maybe you'd like to use your mutation powers, while being able to heal your friends? You can do that too. This skill system is rather interesting in itself, and adds a lot to the game. You can become pretty much anything you want to. The music in Fallen Earth is great, and really fits the theme. However, the "coolness" of the music is often dulled out by the mediocre sound effects that either don't fit well or overall just sound bad. Some things don't even have any sound effects that should-- whether this is a bug or not remains to be seen, but seeing as these things haven't had any sound effects since early closed beta I have to assume it isn't a bug but a poor mistake instead. Role playing in this game seems difficult at best. There really isn't a lot of role play experiences or tools here, unfortunately. Sure, you can role play, of course, there's nothing stopping you. But there isn't really any easy way to go about doing it. Because the story is so... well... bland, and given that each player character is supposed to have the same cloned background, it's hard to really get into character. It can be done, but you'll have to be really creative about it. There are six different factions you can choose to join later in the game, and each faction has an ally with another faction and an enemy with the other. It will be impossible to be on friendly terms with each faction, and each faction has a different set of quests. This means there is a lot of replayability here, when you are finally able to join said factions. Yes, there is PVP in this game, but it doesn't sound too promising. While I myself haven't yet gotten into it, it sounds relatively boring and pointless. And given that your characters have a relatively small amount of health, and weapons do quite a bit of damage, PVP sounds like it will mostly be about who can dish out the most damage in two or three shots rather than having a fun, tactical experience. As for the game world itself... Well, the game takes place in the Grand Canyon, and, as far as I know, does not expand beyond that. So you've got a fairly limited amount of space to explore-- though the area is large enough that you probably wont notice this. There are supposedly around 70 towns to explore, so there is a lot to see. However, while the developers strove to give it a damaged, post-apocalyptic look and feel, they didn't take much into consideration regarding making the areas fun to explore. The map is mostly a giant rocky desert with a few trees sprinkled here and there, and some rubble every so often. While I do understand that, given the setting, there shouldn't be a whole lot around... But this is also an MMO where exploration is key, and in Fallen Earth there really isn't much to see and explore in the environement itself. Generally one area looks like the next area... All-in-all "Fallen Earth" is a decent game with some great possibilities but, unfortunately, really doesn't do anything to achieve these possibilities. Perhaps in the future the developers will add more to this game and make it a deeper, more engaging experience. But as it stands, while this game is fun, it really has no lasting appeal. If you're a fan of "Fallout" or are just tired of all the fantasy MMORPGs out there than this game is definately worth a try, but don't expect to stick with it for very long. My rating... 4 stars out of 5 |
